Sign Placement in Public Right of Way

Post Date:04/10/2012 11:30 AM
Westerville, OH – While warmer weather marks the beginning of garage sale season, the Westerville Division of Police reminds residents that temporary signs are prohibited from being placed in the public right of way or posted to utility poles. Garage/yard sale and “For Sale” signs are examples of temporary signage that cannot be placed in the public right of way. The right of way is generally the area between the street and the sidewalk. Signs placed in the public right of way or on utility poles will be removed. Offenders may be contacted by the Division of Police or Westerville Code Enforcement.

Westerville Ordinance 1181.04 (3) states, "No sign, except for municipally owned signs and signs authorized by the City Manager for community events and programs which are sponsored by nonprofit, public, educational, religious and charitable organizations, shall be placed in, on or above the public right-of-way including on utility poles. The Planning and Zoning Officer or his designee may effect removal of any sign illegally placed within the right of way of any road within the Municipality."

City Ordinances may be viewed online at www.westerville.org > Government > Codified Ordinances.
