The City of Westerville's Street Tree program promotes environmental sustainability and enhances the well-being of Westerville by expanding our urban canopy to improve our streetscapes. An increased number of trees contributes to improved air quality, reduced stormwater runoff, and significant carbon storage. Additionally, they enhance the aesthetic appeal of the city and can potentially increase property values.

The program is prioritizing areas currently lacking street trees and are fulfilling these as budget allows; however, residents with treeless tree lawns are encouraged to contact the City Forester to be added to the waiting list. The city will assume responsibility for the planting and subsequent care of the tree.

FAQs

Can I choose my street tree species?

Homeowners can request a tree species for their tree lawn, with preference given to one of the three approved species for their street, as per the Street Tree Master List. Other species may be considered, but a requested tree cannot be guaranteed.
How much does a new street tree cost?

There is no cost to the homeowner for street trees. Priority will be given to underserved neighborhoods, in the order they are received and as budgets allow.
If I don’t want a tree in my tree-lawn, can The City install one elsewhere on my property?

This program is specifically designed to expand the urban canopy within the right of way and does not include private property.
Was this program offered to all City residents?

Over 4,000 plantable sites have been identified throughout the City's tree lawns, and planting is being done on a request basis. While the ultimate goal is to reach full capacity, priority is currently being given to locations with few or no existing street trees.
What happens if the tree causes damage to my sidewalk?

At this time, The City covers all costs for sidewalk replacements if it is determined to be a trip hazard that meets City requirements following an inspection by staff. If corrective work is required, residents will not be responsible for any associated costs of panel replacement.

What kind of street tree will be planted in front of my property?

The replacement street trees are chosen for your property following the Street Tree Master List. This list provides three trees as replacements for each street to improve the diversity of our urban forest canopy. Unless requested by the resident the City Forester will select the specific tree species for each location.
When will my New Tree be planted?

Trees ordered by the end of June will be planted in the fall of the same year. Approved requests received after June will be planted in the following spring or fall depending on available funds.
